| Filing Fee & Deadline | Timely application for the
July exam is prior to January 30. Timely application for the February exam
is prior to August 30. Late filing with a showing of good cause is March 30
for the July exam and October 30 for the February exam.
Fees for Certification of Fitness range from $150 for Texas law students to $875 for practicing attorneys and $975 for foreign nation attorneys. |

| Structure | The Texas Bar Exam has four components: the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), the Multistate Performance Test (MPT), Procedure and Evidence Questions and the Texas Essays. The MBE consists of 200 multiple choice questions which test specific points of law in the areas of Constitutional Law, Evidence, Torts, Contracts and Sales, Real Property, and Criminal Law and Procedure. Procedure and Evidence Questions are contained in a 90 minute exam consisting of Civil Procedure (Federal and Texas court jurisdiction, pleading and practice), Criminal Procedure and Evidence. The Texas Essay Portion consists of twelve 30-minute essays covering Real Property (including Oil & Gas), UCC, Business Associations, Family Law, Trusts, Wills and Estates. Four new subjects were tested beginning in July, 1999. They are Bankruptcy and Tax which are Cross-over topics that may be included as elements in other questions, and Guardianship (added to Trusts) and Consumer rights, including the TX Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The MPT is a single 90 minute question designed to test a candidate's ability to competently perform real-life tasks of a new lawyer. |
| Scoring | All four parts of the exam are scaled and combined. The MBE and Texas Essay portions are worth 2/5 each and the MPT and Procedure portions are worth 1/10 each. A total scaled score of 675 out of a possible 1000 points is required to pass. |
| MPRE | Required for all applicants. Passing scaled score of 85 is required. |
