| Structure | The California Bar Exam has three components: the
Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), the California Essay Exam and the California Performance Tests.
The MBE consists of 200 multiple choice questions which test specific points of law in the areas of Constitutional Law, Evidence, Torts, Contracts and Sales, Real Property, and Criminal Law and Procedure. The Essay Exam consists of 6 essay questions. The essays test the candidate's ability to spot relevant issues and apply the appropriate principles of law. The testable areas include the MBE subjects as well as Federal Civil Procedure, Community Property, Corporations, Professional Responsibility, Remedies, Trusts and Wills. Since July 2007, CA Civil Procedure has been added and Agency, Partnerships and Corporations were consolidated in a subject called Business Associations. In addition, the CA Evidence Code was added as a separate subject from the Federal Rules of Evidence. The two Performance Tests are designed to test a candidate's ability to competently perform real-life tasks assigned to a lawyer. |
| Scoring | The Exam is scored as follows: the MBE and the California Portion (Essays and Performance) are graded separately and then combined using the equi-percentile method. The MBE is worth 35% of the total score and the California Portion is worth 65%, of which the Essays count 60% and the Performance Test the remaining 40%. To pass, a candidate must receive a combined score of 1,440 out of a possible 2,000 points. |
| MPRE | Required;. 86 is the passing score. |
